carbidopa. These substances help the neurons
affected by Parkinson's disease to make more
dopamine in an effort to increase their level of
function.
Using the garden analogy, this is like adding
fertilizer to the plants to help them grow. This is a
good strategy if that is what the plant needs.
However, if the soil is toxic, if the plants have too
little or too much water, if the composition of the
soil is improper for those plants or if they get too
little or too much sunlight, adding extra fertilizer
will not keep the plants healthy.
If the plant is in an unhealthy state, it is
necessary to figure out what is wrong in its
environment and adjust it accordingly. Given the
correct environment, if the plants are not too badly
damaged, they can undo the damage done to them
and return to a healthy state over time.
This is the goal of traditional Chinese medicine
when treating Parkinson's disease - to alter the
environment around the neurons affected, undoing
as much damage as possible and returning these
cells to as healthy a state as possible. Let's explain
this in more detail.
