FirearmImporter

        What is an Importer?:

An importer is a company that imports firearms from a foreign country into the United States. The Gun Control

Act of 1968 states that an importer has to stamp their name on firearms that are imported. If a firearm has

foreign country stamped on the frame or barrel, look for the name of the importer and enter it in the Importer

        field in our Point-of-Sale System.

The importer is also entered in the 4473 gun form next to the manufacturer’s name (Question 26).

Do all foreign made firearms have an importer stamped?:

A firearm imported before 1968 may not have the name of the importer stamped on it; a firearm imported after

1968 should have the name of the importer stamped on it. After thoroughly examining the firearm, if the

importer stamp is not evident, enter “N/V” (not visible) in TOPS—don’t enter the city or country as the importer.

What if the firearm is made in the United States? What

should I enter for the Importer?:

If a firearm was manufactured in the U.S., enter N/A (not applicable) in the description of the firearm. Just make

sure that it doesn’t have the name of a foreign country stamped on it. If it does, then it was not made in the U.S

and, therefore, it was imported. In some cases, parts of a firearm may have been manufactured in a foreign

country, while other parts may have been manufactured in the U.S. These firearms should have the name of the

importer stamped on them. Don’t enter “USA” or “US” as the importer.
