Chapter III
Leadership Concept from the Theravāda
Perspective
This Chapter is going to describe the concept of leadership which are already
explored from both primary and secondary sources in the perspective of Theravādin,
which consist of the following four sections: 1) Significance and Definition of
Leadership Concepts, 2) Basic principles of leadership from the Buddha’s Teaching, 3)
The Duties of leaders, and 4) The qualities of leadership from Theravāda perspective.
The main point of section one will discuss the development concept of leadership in
Theravāda Buddhism. Section two will share the basic idea about the principles of
leadership. Section three will give the explanation about the duties of leader and finally
section four will demonstrate the qualities of leadership according to the perspective of
Theravāda Buddhism.
3.1 Significance and Definition of Leadership Concepts
Looking back to the Buddha era 2564 years from now, there was a prince
from an ordinary human being and became a grateful leader of all beings even the
Brahmin, for the welfare, and benefit of the world. He was the Lord Buddha. He has a
clear vision of achieving the ultimate goal: Nibbāna and goals: happiness of human,
divine and Brahmin for any beings who is under his guidance of His Dhamma. He
inspired his followers and all beings by following his step to do more, know more and
become more. In Theravada perspective clearly a leader or a successor based on

morality. “Yathāvādī Tathākārī, Yathākārī Tathā vādī” this is one of the most his
significance of quality of leadership in Theravāda, “he does as he speaks and speaks as

he does.” Leaders must observe and wear this as their clothes should never be taken
off them. He practiced to be free from suffering as he preached and preached the
Dhamma to escape from the Samsara as he took action. Leader is not about the position,
