Crossfit has positioned itself in the “your workout is our warm-up” league,
stressing that you can cut back on the hours if you seriously increase the
intensity. The nice thing about Crossfit is that it also has a focus not just on
cardio (getting the heart rate up), but also weight training (for
strengthening the muscles and bones). As the genius Dr Van says (remember
the thick Afrikaans accent as you say it), “you must have both in order to be
most effective.”
The magic bullet
There isn’t really a magic bullet to speak of when it comes to exercise.
Anatomically, we were designed to use our bodies, and the “use it or lose it”
principle applies here. Of course, the millions around the world who hate
exercise would disagree. But in the most simplistic way, let’s take it back to
what Reese Witherspoon said in the movie Legally Blonde: “Exercise releases
endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people don’t kill people.”
We have to defer to the genius Dr Van again. Rob recently went to him for an
ECG, which required exercise to get the heart rate up. Afterwards Dr Van
said, “How do you feel?” Rob said, “I actually feel better.” Dr Van said, “Of
course you do. You’ve just forced extra oxygen through your body.” Need
we say more?
The pros
As we have already stated, there is scientific evidence to suggest that
exercise strengthens the immune system, repairs damaged blood vessels
and body tissue, and keeps you younger and healthy.
