attack does not need to have irreparable and irreversible damage to the
brain – the ability to remyelinate means that you can gain back use of your
full brain function.
Whether you believe this new science or not, those sedentary lifestyles we
were talking about in the beginning of the book still apply: humans were not
designed to sit around tablets, PCs and laptops all day, without a stitch of
exercise and some fresh air in their faces.
Let’s talk for a minute about the “muscle is more dense than fat” argument,
which some people say is rubbish – a kilogram of fat weighs as much as a
kilogram of muscle. Well, we say rubbish to the rubbish – you can feel it in
your waistline! When you get on the scale as you slim down, you may not see
a drop in the numbers, but you can feel it in your clothing, and your friends
are all telling you how buff you look.
Okay, let’s get to our point: in South Africa, Run Walk for Life is a popular
programme that you can join, for assistance with an exercise programme.
The meetings happen in areas of major centres around the country, and you
basically join with a group of people where you can exercise regularly. The
upside is that it’s nice and clubbish, so getting your heart rate up is a social
activity, not some lone wanderer off on a nomadic crusade (unless that’s
your thing). The group leader will help you determine your fitness levels, and
you can then steadily increase until you are walking at speed, or you can
switch to running.
Another great opportunity is the now-famed parkrun. It’s free and is run by
volunteers, usually taking place most Saturdays of the year at 8am. Members
of the BTC Eating Plans crew have joined the parkrun in both Johannesburg
and Durban, and can vouch that it’s a great way to spend a Saturday
morning.
