        Your studies

Janet Clarke Hall is a leading academic College. This means that we each strive to reach our own
academic goals and fulfill our potential in all aspects of our personal and communal life. We
value a very rich extracurricular life alongside our studies. As such, it is important to find an

appropriate balance between study commitments, social activities, part time work, volunteering,
and the wide range of other opportunities on offer within and beyond JCH.

The College requires all first-year students to undertake a full academic load, which we define as
four subjects (50 Points) in each semester of the academic year. Whilst the University offers

subjects outside the traditional semester structure (i.e., Winter & Summer), including these subjects
in your subject load must be discussed in advance with the Dean of Studies. Likewise, for returning
students (second year and above) any variation in terms of course load (including overloading)
must be discussed in advance with the Dean of Studies. If a reduced or altered course load is

formally approved, a student must still be studying the equivalent of at least 37.5 points per
semester to apply for a student leadership position. This both ensures that we are all sharing a
focus on study during the semesters and allows us to run a comprehensive tutorial program across

a wide range of disciplines, despite being a smaller College.

In some circumstances, the College may put in place an Academic Support Plan to provide a
student with an enhanced level of support, assistance, and monitoring. This may be due to one or

more failed subjects or withdrawal from a subject. A student on Academic Support will be

permitted to return to the College in subsequent semesters if they satisfy the College that they will
meet the requirements of their Academic Support. Note that College scholarships are not typically

impacted by failing a subject. Ultimately we all want you to succeed academically, thrive

personally and make the most of College life.
The College will always require as part of Academic Support that a student balances their
extra-curricular activities with their studies. This is not an attempt to curtail activities within the
Student Club. It is a way for the College, on the basis of its experience with students in leadership
positions, to manage the welfare of students and to help those who have struggled with the
balance between academic and other activities.
