        Consult and Tutorial Cancellation Fees

We hope that tutorials are a rewarding experience for students and tutors alike. To ensure our
tutors have a positive work environment, and can best tailor their tutorials to group dynamics, it is

important for them to know ahead of time how many students are attending. While the

occasional absence is understandable (e.g. visiting family), it is important to give at least 24 hours’

written notice to your tutor. It is very rare for a tutorial to be cancelled at JCH due to

non-attendance by the whole group. In the case where a cancelled tutorial occurs due to this

reason, an administrative fee will be passed on directly to any student(s) who failed to attend

and/or give written notice 24 hours in advance. Exceptions may be made for those who can

provide a medical certificate. These fees include up to $105 per missed tutorial and up to $98 per

missed consult (split proportionally). We are legally required to provide two hours worth of work

per shift for our tutors, and view late cancellations due to group non-attendance as the

equivalent of a worked shift. Cancellation fees are therefore passed on to students as an

educative reminder of the financial value of a tutor's time and the importance of personal

responsibility. As we know, the true value of a tutorial is far greater than the costs, so we
encourage you to make the most of the academic program and ensure timely communication.
The Dean of Studies will also check in with students who regularly miss tutorials to offer support as
appropriate. This may include offering feedback to tutors.
        Academic Support Plans
A student with an Academic Support plan in place will be required to:
            ● Attend all scheduled University classes and College tutorials, notifying the Dean of Studies
and Tutor(s) in advance if they are unable to attend.
            ● Meet with the Dean of Studies regularly throughout the semester to discuss and report on
               their academic progress.
            ● Seek advice from a counsellor and/or Academic Skills staff on the best approaches to their
               studies, as appropriate.
            ● Consider conditions listed under the ‘Running for Student Leadership’ section if they wish to
               run for leadership.
                                                                                                              31
