Objectives
Fixing of working hours and implementation of the same.
Necessary rest in between working hours
Weekly rest
Fixing of time for handing over / taking over of work
Deciding of over time allowance.
Classification:
Intensive: Work which is hard and tiresome, continuous concentration during work, very
difficult to have 1 hours rest time in a 8 hour shift come under Intensive category. Eg:
Section Controller, Wireless Operator, Telephone Operator, etc.
Essentially Intermittent: Light job, 6 hours or more rest in a 12 hour shift come under
Essentially Intermittent category. Eg., Bearer of waiting hall, Gateman (C Class),
safaiwalla, etc.
Excluded: Duty timing is not fixed. 24 hours duty not included in HOER. Eg. Supervisor,
matron, workers in confidential work, Protection Force, etc.
Continuous: Continuous working. Eg. Driver, Guard, TTE, Shunter, Clerk, Typist and
other non classified categories.

Q 14. EXPLAIN SPLIT SHIFT, SHORT OFF & LONG ON
Short Off: Period between two roster. For intensive < 12 hours, Continuous < 10 hours&
Essentially Intermittent < 8 hours
Long On: Maximum period of duty
Intensive: Note more than 8 hours
Continuous: Not more than 10 hours
Essentially Intermittent: Not more than 12 hours
Split Shift:
Break between shifts
Not more than two breaks
Break not less than ½ hour. Shorter break shall be counted as duty
If two breaks, then Govt. Qrtr is necessary
Roster not more than 16 hours
