Ballybeg Greens is the Social Enterprise of BRiLL FRC which runs as a normal business but
differs from a normal business in so far as all profits generated are reinvested into the project for
the betterment of the community.
Ballybeg Greens operates two separate elements.
Firstly, the maintenance of the building, the grounds and the efficient running of the room
booking process for the building, the second element is the growth for sale of herbs, vegetables
and salad leaves. These are normally sold to restaurants, shops and through our veg box scheme,
which is run in tandem with Down Syndrome Ireland (Waterford & South Kilkenny Branch).
Obviously, at this time the restaurant industry is in practical hibernation so therefore this avenue
is not open to us.
Our herbs will be available to purchase from Ardkeen Stores from mid-May and we be restarting
the veg box scheme from the end of May which will run up to Christmas as it did last year. Details
on how to purchase the veg boxes will be available on the Down Syndrome Waterford website
and Facebook page in the next two weeks.
Ballybeg Greens has two fulltime employees, Jack Cashman the Head Grower and Ray Power
Manager. Both work with a team of Community Employment operatives who work as
groundskeepers for the building assistant growers and caretakers. We also works with the LTI
students from the Horticulture Course.
One good thing about plants and food crops is that they continue to grow even during a Pandemic
so even though they may not be getting as much love as normal the crops are thriving, as we move
forward we will work out safe ways to harvest, pack and sell our produce.
