Willow bark has precautions similar to those using aspirin.
• Avoid use if a patient is allergic to aspirin.
• It can cause GI upset, headache, and can impair platelet function,
but less so than aspirin.
• Caution should be used in patients with kidney disease.
• Its use is contraindicated for use in children with viral infection due
to potential concern of Reye syndrome.
2. Coniferin
Coniferin is a phenolic hemilignan (C6-C3) glucoside. It is a white
crystalline solid and in coniferous plants serves as an intermediate in cell
wall lignification, as well as having other biological roles. Coniferin is
obtained from the cambium of coniferous trees. Coniferin is hydrolysed
giving coniferyl alcohol and glucose.
Uses:
Coniferin is used for preparation of vanillin.
Vanillin is a phenolic aldehyde, which is an organic compound with the
molecular formula C8H8O3. It is the primary component of the extract of
the vanilla bean. Synthetic vanillin is used now more often than natural
vanilla extract as a flavoring agent in foods, beverages, and
pharmaceuticals.
