Lignin-based artificial vanilla has a richer flavor profile than oil-based
flavoring; due to the presence of acetovanillone, a minor component in
the lignin-derived product that is not found in vanillin synthesized from
guaiacol.
3. Arbutin
Arbutin is a phenolic glycoside, glycosylated hydroquinone, extracted
from the bearberry (uva ursi) plant in the genus Arctostaphylos among
many other medicinal plants, primarily in the Ericaceae family.
Uses:
1. Arbutin is used as a diuretic and urinary tract antiseptic.
Uva ursi, or bearberry, leaf is used for urinary symptoms, the active
compound of which isarbutin, which is converted into hydroquinone
following consumption.Crude plant extracts are more effective medicinally
than isolated arbutin. Uva-ursi is active against typical pathogens
especially E. coli and has diuretic properties. Uva-ursi increases
susceptibility of bacteria to antibiotics such as β-lactams.
