SUCCESSION
In 1986 Dave F elected to retire. We had worked together
as a team for so long that I had no doubt, nor did Dave,
that I’d be named as his replacement. Two days before
the official date of his retirement, Dave was called to the
front office to discuss his replacement. It seemed that
MDMSC upper management staff had been trying to
elevate the position of some of the up-and-coming
younger people, and asked Dave if he thought one of
them might be elevated to be his replacement rather than
me. Dave returned from that meeting, met with me, and
asked if I would consider training a younger person as his
replacement! I was deeply offended, hurt and really
angry!!! I told Dave I was going home for the day, think
on the issue, and give him my answer the following
morning.
