Promoting Learning Coach Involvement - Why Multi-Sensory Activities are Crucial
                                                   for Reading Success
Presented By: Alina Kitchell, Kristi Hawk, Amanda Harbaugh, Amanda Mullen
Target Audience: Kindergarten and 1st Grade Teachers, K-2 reading specialists, K-2 special
education teachers (level 1 and 2), K-2 Family Coaches

The K12 PhonicsWorks multi-sensory reading program provides a unique opportunity to bring balance
to our student’s screen filled environment. Every kindergarten and first grade student is provided with a
kit that provides daily opportunities for students to engage in visual, auditory, tactile and oral learning
activities, while strengthening reading skills. This session is designed to give participants an
opportunity to manipulate and explore the kit, brainstorm creative ways to introduce the kit to learning
coaches and students during the first ELA lesson, and discuss ways to monitor and assess student use
of the kit throughout the school year. Participants will receive handouts and resources to share with
learning coaches that focus on multi-sensory approaches to reading.

RACE Strategy for Constructed Response Questions
Presented By: Gina Mallon, Kim Strong, Robin Hartman
Target Audience: Elementary School, Middle School

Are you tired of reading responses from kids that don’t make sense or that aren’t in complete
sentences? Check out this session for teachers on the use of the RACE strategy, which provides
students with a routine, methodical approach to making sure TDA questions are being answered
accurately and with detail and evidence that comes from the text. In addition, we will provide some
great strategies on how to improve students’ ability to learn new vocabulary and cite evidence. These
strategies have been used with our Agora students and the data submitted for our Action Research
Project. The progress in students' responses on both classwork and assessments is amazing and can
be used at all great levels! RACE and other strategies provide the necessary structure for many
students who have difficulty with written responses.
