A day out with Pakistan Army
delegation of students and faculty members from the
Government College University Lahore spent a day out visiting
Avarious military units and formations of Pakistan Army at the
Lahore Garrison.
The day-long programme was specifically organized to enlighten
students on the functioning and training of Pakistan Army, its
organization and defense capability. GCU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr.
Asghar Zaidi also joined the delegation at the IV Corps Headquarters
and met with Corps Commander Lt. Gen. Majid Ehsan. The Corps
Commander briefed students about the sacrifices rendered by the
Pakistan Army for maintaining peace in the country.
Lt. Gen. Ehsan pledged his assistance and support to GCU in
establishing a museum of Iqbaliat, and arranging activities for the
character-building of students.
Prof. Zaidi paid rich tributes to Pak Army for its success in war against
terrorism. "Our armed forces have written a new history of bravery, its
officers and jawans, who embraced martyrdom, are the heroes of the Page 22
whole nation,” he said.
Later, the students witnessed a demonstration by Quick Reaction
Force to combat terrorists and commended the agility and fighting
capability of the elements of Light Commando Battalion.
They were also imparted technical knowhow in weapon handling and
small arms firing skills. They also visited Yadgar-e-Shuhada and Army
Museum.

The panel discussion started with Mirza Athar Baig who discussed the
importance of cultural studies in the universities and the preservation of
the Archaeological sites. He illustrated his point through an example of a
neglected and unrecognized dilapidated site on the outskirts of Lahore.
Malik Maqsood Ahmad gave a presentation on the work of Directorate
of Archaeology. Mr Malik showed a wide range of preservation and
renovation projects taken up by the Department of Archeology, Punjab.
Later, Dr. Hameed touched upon the importance of Archaeological
Heritage and why it is necessary to take care of the sites. He pointed out
how the Archaeology department is not appreciated by the academia.
VC Prof. Zaidi also stated that GCU would try to work on the
documentation of the Government College's historical building. He
highlighted a need for collaboration with the Directorate of Archaeology,
Government of Punjab for restoration of some parts of GCU building.
