14th Reach the Beach Relay to Fund Breakthrough T1D Research
PLYMOUTH – A devoted group of local women who call themselves “Sistas with Blistas” completed the 14th year of running the Reach the Beach Ragnar Relay race on Septem- ber 13th-14th. This year’s team was captained by Kris Valenti and Fran Gonsalves, and fellow runners included Jessica Boyn- ton, Michelle Chamberlain, Jennifer Crane, Sarah Crane, Thea Dodds, Kristy Duris, Caitlin Dulac, Carolyn LeB- lanc, Diana Merriam, Eleni Panagoulis, and Andrea Sweet. This energetic, over-forty crew collectively ran over 200 miles from Lancaster Fairgrounds to Hampton Beach State Park in just over 30 hours. The trek across NH required two rented vans, lots of preparation, pit stops along the way, and many
social media posts document- ing their journey. There were twelve runners (“Runnas”) and several drivers (“Drivas”) who were mostly former run- ners. The Drivas included Fran Gonsalves, Jessica Halm, Cheryl Somma, Joan Turley,
and Charlene Whitman. Run- nas were split into two vans and took turns completing des- ignated legs of the thirty-six- leg route. Each runner covered between 10.5 and 22.9 miles based on their leg assignment, come rain or shine. Most Run-
nas also ran at least one of their legs at night and wore a sundry of brightly lit and reflective gear to keep them safe as they navigated the hilly NH roads.
What makes this group special is that they run to raise money for Type 1 Diabetes re- search and awareness. Break- through T1D (formally known as JDRF) was founded in 1970 by families whose loved ones were diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes (T1D). Breakthrough T1D is a tax-exempt nonprofit 501(c)3 organization and is the leading global Type 1 diabetes research organization. They strive to help improve the ev- eryday lives of individuals and families impacted while also driving toward a cure. They
