FEBRUARY
By William nieman
My first experience locally with what we called “doctor- ing” in those days took place in Dr. John Greenan’s Bristol office on Pleasant Street. That was about three-quarters of a century ago. After cutting my foot on a rock in Newfound Lake, my Dad took me to “Doc” Greenan’s. The doc- tor, a World War II veteran, stitched my foot together. He did a great job. There is no re- sidual scar. Back in those days, not everyone in this area was so lucky to have such quick and thorough medical care. There was a hospital in Franklin, and Speare Memorial in Plymouth was under construction, but there was no comprehensive primary care facility in Bristol and the immediate Newfound Region. That void would be filled by the end of the 20th century due to the efforts of Dr. Frederick Kelsey and many others, including Marion and Herbert Robie, who gifted the land on which the Mid-State

over a hundred professional medical providers and support personnel. All are dedicated to a mission of health mainte- nance and healing. Each has a unique life story worthy of tell- ing. I can’t tell all their stories, so I have chosen one whose bi- ography will exemplify the oth-
