Ideal teacher needed for the school
Caring pedagogy
An ideal teacher should prescribed
Nodding’s pedagogy of care. A
teacher who is willing to offer a holis-
tic support to learners in terms of their
social, emotional and physical well-
being. In addition, the teacher should
be able to act in loco parentis (in the
place of the parent) while learners are
in the care. Extend this relationship to
include parents, community to ensure the effectiveness of teaching. This creates an atmosphere
in which learners are able to express themselves freely in schools and in society.
The idea of ‘care’ in education has
compelled teachers to re-evaluate
and re-assess their educational prac-
tices. Previously, the role of the
teacher was one that was confined
to monotonous educational activi-
ties. However, modern theorists like
Nodding and Goldstein have chal-
lenged the status quo by providing
compelling evidence on how much
care influences learning.
Nobody cares how much you know, until they know how much you care.

Theodore Roosevelt
