REVOKING OPPORTUNITY TO SUBMIT PARENTAL NOTES FOR STUDENT ABSENCES

Parents are permitted to write six notes for absence occurrences per semester.

Schools are to notify parents in writing when students have accrued excessive absences such that parent notes will no
longer be accepted in order to excuse absences. The notice should advise the parent of the expected procedure for
having an absence from school excused. A letter is available on the Intranet at Departments, Student Services,
Attendance, Parental Note Restriction (see appendix - Parental Note Restriction Letter).

According to district policy, requesting that a medical professional’s note be provided to excuse an absence shall not be
the only alternative given to the parent when revoking the use of parent notes.

Thus, when parents have exceeded the number of parental notes in a semester, students will need to provide a doctor’s
note to excuse the absence OR students will need to report to the campus nurse for evaluation. If the campus nurse or
other school official determines that the student is too ill to attend school, the absence shall be excused.

REQUIRED DOCTOR’S NOTE / CLINIC RELEASE

Three or more days (or upon the third day) of consecutive absences require a doctor’s note to be excused. If a parent is
unable to take the student to a doctor, the student may be evaluated by the school nurse or other school official. If the
nurse or school official finds that the student is too ill to attend school, the absence shall be excused. Likewise, if the
student is sent home for the day through the campus clinic, that day’s partial day absence shall be excused. If the
student/parent is advised by the school nurse or campus official that the student must stay at home the day following
the clinic dismissal, that day’s absence shall also be excused.
