PARENT NOTES
PARENTAL NOTICE OF STUDENT ABSENCES
Schools should instruct parents to notify their child’s school attendance office whenever their child is absent from school.
Students may be excused for temporary absences with a parent note. Notes should include:
-The full name of the student -The reason for the absence
-The student ID# -Name and signature of the parent
-The date(s) of the absences -Best Contact Phone number for the parent
Six parental notes per absence occurrences are accepted per semester. Parental notes may cover one or two days of
absence.
Absences that are recorded as “A”s in the Skyward system, are automatically converted to “U”s overnight AFTER the
third day following the absence.
Written notice from a parent is required within three school days in order to excuse an absence.
Parent notes are accepted for three days after the student’s return to school. Late parent notes may be accepted by the
campus at the discretion of the campus administrator; but, the school is not required to accept parent notes after the
three days “grace” period.
GUARDIAN ENTERED ILLNESS NOTES DIRECTLY INTO SKYWARD
Parents / guardians have the opportunity to enter illness excuses directly into Skyward using the Family Access feature
of Skyward in the Attendance section with the button “Absence Request.” Parents may only enter excuses that apply to
illness and only for one or two days of illness. The electronic notes must be entered within three days of the illness
(same rule as physical notes). Requests are either approved or denied by campus attendance personnel.
Campus attendance personnel access the electronic parent notes by going to Office, Attendance, Entry By Student BS
and finding the “Parent Entered Request” button on the lower right of the screen. WS\OF\AT\BS. When the button is
clicked, a list of requests will come up. The arrow on the far left of the entry can be clicked to see the full details. The
request is either approved or denied. If approved, attendance is corrected for the date. A response is sent to the
parent. This section should be checked every day for new entries.
Two filters are present in this section. “View Requests Entered on or after’ -- the calendar filter. Be sure this date is
changed periodically (once a week is recommended.) The “Filters” drop down offers four choices: “All Requests”,
“Approved Requests”, “Denied Requests”, “Pending Requests”. It is suggested to keep the filter on “Pending Requests”
to highlight new requests that have not been handled. The filter may be changed at any time to “All Requests” and the
calendar filter adjusted appropriately to see past requests. Requests are kept in Skyward with the student’s record. See
Click Sheet in the Appendix.
