6. N-PB (Personal Business; official documentation needed)
▪ Citizenship proceedings attended by a student in connection with the student’s application for US citizenship,
including one day for travel to and one day for travel from, can be considered non-absences. A maximum of three
days N-PB may be used with official documentation. Additional travel/waiting days may be excused by an
administrator using the E-PB code.
▪ Taking part in a US Naturalization Ceremony including one day of travel to and one day of travel from may be coded
as a non-absence.
▪ Serving as an election clerk, for a maximum of two days per school year, is coded as a non-absence.
▪ For a child in the conservatorship of the Department of Family and Protective Services non-absences can be coded
when attending a mental health appointment, therapy appointment, court ordered family visitation for part or full
day and/or court-ordered activity.
▪ A student who sounds “Taps” at a military honors funeral may be coded as a non-absence for the day.
EXCUSED ABSENCE CODING FOR SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES
Any absence may be excused by a campus administrator with a valid reason. The Central Attendance Office supports
the decision of administrators to either excuse or not excuse discretionary absences. Decisions regarding
discretionary absences are made at the campus level and not at the Central Attendance Office.
Flu-like illnesses, E-FL used when one of the following scenarios occurs:
• A parent or doctor’s note is submitted to a campus describing the reason for a student’s absence as having 2 of
the 3 cardinal symptoms of the Flu: coughing, fever, and/or sore throat.
• A parent phone call detailing a student’s illness as having Flu-like symptoms.
If at a later date, further clarification is given regarding a student’s absence which rules out the Flu, the E-FL coding must
not change. Since at the time of the illness the student did exhibit these symptoms, the coding will remain as an E-FL.
Please be flexible in allowing parent notes for the flu. We can accept a parent note for up to 5 days of flu illness. Some
doctors do not want patients sick with the flu in their offices. We do not want students with the flu back to school
before they are well, and, we do not want students with the flu coming to be checked by the nurse.
OUT OF SCHOOL SUSPENSION, E-OS
Absences due to out of school suspension are not voluntary and, therefore, must be excused.
A student suspended from school for a discipline matter shall be excused and such absences will not be used in the
calculation for violation of the compulsory attendance law (truancy). However, suspension absences are used in
calculating a student’s compliance with the 90% attendance rule.
Students may not be suspended for “skipping” or arriving tardy to class
