Green Surfaces

The conditioning of the putting surfaces were excellent on the day of the site visit. The bent/poa
greens were firm, pure, and rolling true. The greens have been overseeded with 007 bentgrass
seed which has been the most popular choice within the Mid-Atlantic for many years. There did
not appear to be a deficit of cupping locations due to excessive sloping of the green surfaces.
Mr. Perry mentioned the green lows are beginning to hold moisture (this was not observed as it
had been quite dry prior to my visit). Our suggestions to remedy this condition are as follows...

Installing a “smile drain” of 2” Turfflow Microslit drainage pipe within the lows of the greens will aid
in drying the green fronts. This pipe is trenched into the green cavity and backfilled with USGA
spec. sand, no gravel bedding is required. We often recommend this sand channel drainage sys-
tem be installed throughout the entirety of soil based greens, given that your greens are sand
based, a single line at the lows will work well.

                                                                  Sand channel drainage

While modest, there are topdressing sill build-ups on some greens that may be hindering surface
drainage. Removing these imperfections will enhance surface drainage within the green lows.
