FAIRWAY AND ROUGHS ANALYSIS

The Eagle’s Landing Staff is now managing primarily Vamont Bermudagrass within the landing areas.
While Vamont is an older variety turfgrass, it is providing excellent playing surfaces.
The rough turf is a collection of Vamont bermudagrass, common bermudagrass, Turf Type Tall Fescue,
Bluegrass, and Poa Annua. While its’ appearance can best be described as “splotchy”, in most areas the
playability of the rough is acceptable. Staff is correctly focusing their current attention and resourced to-
wards the more impactful in-play tee, green, and fairway turf.
Both fairways and roughs are adequately supported with a modern irrigation system that was installed in
          2017.

                                                         Drainage

Nearly half of the golf holes can be modestly improved though targeted drainage improvements within con-
centrated swaled areas. This proposed work includes both surface recontouring (to direct water into con-
centrated areas for collection) and drainage installation (solid pipe, perforated pipe, and drain inlets).
Please note that the primary goal of these drainage improvements is to not transmit 100% of the surface
flow during a large storm event as that would often prove cost-prohibitive. Instead, successful targeted golf
course drainage aims to quicken the recovery time of super-saturated soil conditions following the rain
event. These pipe systems wick the soil (primarily utilizing perforated drain piping backfilled with stone and
sand) to best protect the fairways and roughs from Mid-Atlantic afternoon thundershowers that cause the
most turf damage during the summer months.
Please note that this approach allows for a more cost-effective smaller sizing of piping (2”-6” diameter) al-
lowing for the installation of more pipe (at a smaller size) to provide the maximum soil wicking for the dollar
          spent.
These targeted drainage improvements can be completed by an outside contractor or “in-house”.
