4.8 Manual Handling.
It can be expected that employees will be required to undertake manual handling during cleaning
works – lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling.
The company strives to take all reasonable measures to avoid or to minimise manual handling e.g.
ensuring waste bags are only handled when light enough to lift alone
Where manual handling cannot be avoided the following measures will be applied:-
• All works with significant manual handling will be risk assessed prior to work commencement
• All employees will receive appropriate training concerning manual handling risks and good
lifting techniques.
• Where appropriate lifting and carrying aids and equipment will be provided e.g. trolleys
• Aids for manual handling will be subject to inspection regularly. Any defective equipment will
be removed from service and appropriately repaired or disposed of.
• Safety footwear is required to be worn whilst working and will protect feet in the event of a
dropped load. Should the use of gloves be required by risk assessment they will be provided.
• Employees are required to report any injury or ill health that could affect their normal ability to
lift safely.
• Employees are required to report any injury or ill health that they believe has been caused by
their work.
