Page 6 - Jaymee Garrood Follow Your Dreams
P. 6
With no time to reset the hole shot device and start blocks, the
plan was just to finish the race in one piece and pick up some
points for the championship, and after a planned tentative
start Jaymee picked off some riders from starting at the back
of the field to secure the vital points she desired.
Back in the pits, it was ice packs and nurofen in abundance
with many team mates, riders and spectators dropping by to
check that Jaymee was ok. Serious contemplation was then
made to pulling out of the final race of the day as serious
bruising was coming out on both shoulders and knee’s but
more troubling was slight blurry vision.
Determination once again kicked in and Jaymee against advice went to the line for race three, with the simple plan of points.
Keeping out of trouble Jaymee managed to finish the race battered and bruised and with a serious headache but pleased to make
the end of the meeting. Another incident marked the race as the hard charging Kayleigh, who had been flying all day took a
dramatic tumble resulting in a bad facial injury and damage to her machine, but again the bravery of these girl’s surfaced again
as Kayleigh remounted, with blood clearly dripping from lip and minus a helmet visor, to finish the race.
The final overall was a result of sheer strength and determination from the young rider, defiantly blood sweat and gears today,
and the journey back to Surrey was a painful one but with character fully demonstrated.
Thankfully there were a couple of weeks off to recover
before the first IMBA on foreign soil in Belgium, so to change
the scene and recharge Jaymee and boyfriend Dave headed
to the kite surfing armada on Hayling Island, the perfect
release from Motorsport for the weekend, then it would be
back to station and planning for the trip to Belgium with
Team GB.
Within the blink of an eye we were all loaded and heading
for the ferry at Dover, before the long drive to Belgium to
meet up with the team. Fuelled by a hearty breakfast and
motivated with some killer tunes we arrived at the race to make
camp, and meet the other team members and with tents pitched we walked the track and went to the tent for the evening’s
entertainment.
Whilst the band was good and the beer was flowing for the support crews, bed was
calling, however the best entertainment was to come in the early hours of the morning,
with the return of Team Dunston (Alex and Pete) riding through camp on the newly
acquisitioned custom step through MX machine, much to their own very noisy
enjoyment, only to be cautioned by Team GB mum Karen Hall screaming “will you two go
to bed, poor Jaymee is in her tent and needs some bloody rest!”
Suitable chastised the fun loving pair retired for the night.
Race day arrived with souring temperatures and a clear sun filled sky, with the track
freshly prepared and watered the team headed out on to the track for practice before
qualification.
Lead team rider Chelsea Gowland had her work cut out to hang on to the yellow jersey
this weekend, with both the top girls from Belgium and the Netherlands leading the way
in qualifying however she and the rest of the GB girls were on the pace.
With a ridiculously small gate, start straight and dusty conditions the girls all lined up in
the sweltering heat for race one, all riders concerned by the pre-race track watering.
