for the Electronic
Prescription Service
(EPS) Launch in Wales?
With the rollout of the Electronic Prescription Service
(EPS) in Wales fast approaching, it’s crucial to get
your pharmacy, colleagues, and patients ready. 'In
our November article we covered how to apply for
smartcards, ensuring, ensuring your team are equipped
to handle electronic prescriptions. Now, we’ll focus on
the next key step: engaging patients and colleagues to
make the transition smooth and hassle-free.
Over the coming months, we’ll share tips on how to lock in patient
loyalty, assist them with the switch from paper prescriptions, and guide
your team in supporting patients through the EPS nomination journey.
What do you need to do?
Here’s a checklist of key steps to help your pharmacy prepare:
• Brief all colleagues on the EPS changeover.
• Apply for smartcards (if you haven’t already!).
• Engage with patients to inform them about the benefits of EPS.
• Attend GP engagement meetings to streamline processes with
local practices.
• Start nominating patients onto your pharmacy’s Patient
Medication Record (PMR).

What is the Electronic Prescription
Service (EPS)?
EPS is an NHS service that allows GPs to send prescriptions directly
to pharmacies electronically. This eliminates the need for patients to
collect paper prescriptions from their GP practice, offering them more
convenience and enhancing patient loyalty to your pharmacy.
How do patients use EPS?
To use EPS, patients must nominate a pharmacy to receive their
electronic prescriptions. This process is called nomination. Once their
local GP has gone live with EPS, patients can choose any participating
pharmacy, though they can only nominate one pharmacy at a time.
