Having joined Rowlands Castle GC in 2013, I did not expect to be the Ladies
Captain 2017/2018. However, as with many things in life there are surprises and in
this case a nice surprise. While I may still be a relative newcomer to golf, I have
learnt a lot in the last few years. In respect of my personal CV, thirty years in the
Police Service has made me pretty resilient to most things. ‘Problem solving’ and
‘dealing with ambiguity’ are just many of the life skills that were needed during my
professional career and may well be useful in the coming year!

I also recognise that Rowlands Castle GC has many traditions that should be upheld.
That said, we must not let traditions stifle new innovations. The Ladies Committee
and I will be reviewing some of the ways we do things to see if there is a more
efficient method. Everyone’s time is precious and I want to make best use of it.
The mantra will be ‘don’t work harder, work smarter’.

Rowlands Castle GC has one of the largest numbers of Lady members in the
surrounding area (currently 144). We have benefited from quite a few new Ladies
joining our Section this year. Many have come from other clubs and are
experienced golfers with existing handicaps. We have also recruited Lady members
who are new to golf and have a handicap great than 36. We need to do more to
help these Ladies become integrated into our club. Sue Slight has agreed to
champion this initiative. She is a retired PE teacher so it is well within her skill set
and I am sure she will have some great ideas. If you have a friend or relative who is
interested in starting golf please do get in touch. Rowlands Castle GC is a great
club for lady golfers and prides itself on its warm welcome.

My charity will be “Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance”. I was introduced to
this charity during Debbie Binny’s year and ended up volunteering. It is a fantastic
local organisation that responds to medical emergencies and has, on more than one
occasion, landed on our golf course including during this year’s Dupree. I know
many of you already support it through their Lottery. One of my fellow volunteers
will be attending the Ladies Christmas Lunch to give a brief overview on how the
charity works and how important your donations are to the charity.

Finally, I have received many Good Luck messages in words, cards, texts and
Whatsapp … and also offers of help. Thank you very much to everyone for their
               support.
