The University of Florida recognizes that family is important. There are many opportunities for
children to be on campus for special events. However, it is generally not appropriate for
children of any age to be in the workplace on a regular basis, such as after school each school
day or on regularly scheduled school holidays.
With supervisory approval, children may be brought to the workplace by an employee for brief
visits or other times when it is more efficient for the employee to bring the child into an office
(shortly before or briefly following a physician's appointment, for example). Children must be
supervised on these visits.
In the event of an emergency, and if there are no other alternatives, employees may have
children present in the workplace for brief periods of time provided the parent obtains the
immediate supervisor’s approval in advance. Such arrangements are only meant to be
temporary in nature. When authorized to have a child in the workplace, the parent employee
must supervise the child appropriately and should not leave the child in the custody of another
University employee or student, even for brief periods of time. Approval is at the discretion of
the supervisor and there is no burden of justification on the supervisor for turning down the
request.
Children are not permitted in any hazardous area. Areas of campus that are considered
hazardous include but are not limited to:
1. Power plants, mechanical rooms, confined spaces, food preparation areas;
2. Any areas, indoors or out, containing power tools or machinery with exposed
moving parts or rotating equipment;
3. Areas with excessive noise, temperatures, or pollutants;
4. University vehicles, heavy duty or other motorized equipment;
5. Any other high-risk areas (rooftops, construction zones, etc.);
6. Laboratories or other specialized work areas that include chemicals, biological
hazards, radioactive hazards, flammables, explosives, compressed gasses, sharp
objects, lasers, animals, or hazardous wastes;
7. Patient treatment areas.
