LUNCH:
From the UF TEAMS/USPS Employee Handbook: Employees at the university work a variety of
schedules and are permitted varying amounts of time for lunch depending upon their regular
working schedule. For example, if you work 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, you
typically will be scheduled for a one-hour lunch break. If, on the other hand, you work from 8
a.m. to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday, you typically will be provided a half-hour lunch period.
The lunch break is set by your supervisor.
Employees are expected to manage the length of their lunch breaks so that overtime is not
accrued, nor is early departure on the work day required to avoid overtime. On most days,
employees should be able to stop work to eat, even if the lunch break is earlier or later than the
standard lunch time. There may be some rare exceptions, such as providing continuous escort
to an applicant or conducting a lab experiment where work cannot be interrupted.
If an employee is working only 6 hours or less on a work day because of a previously scheduled
appointment or special event, a lunch break is not required.
BREAKS:
From the UF TEAMS/USPS Employee Handbook: We recognize that employees work better and
enjoy work more when they are rested and refreshed. During each four hours that you work,
you are permitted a 15-minute rest period, whenever possible. During this period, we
encourage you to leave your workstation and relax. Rest-period time may not be accumulated
for later use, that is, to extend your lunch hour, arrive late or leave early.
If the breaks are not taken as prescribed, the time is lost to the employee.
