development of communities within and beyond Namibian borders. It is for this reason
that UNAM commits herself to enter into collaborations and partnerships that are
aimed at building and exchanging knowledge, skills, expertise and resources with
other stakeholders. In order for UNAM’s programs to yield positive and meaningful
impact in society, UNAM must strive for social relevance, by deploying its scholarly
expertise and resources to engage with communities within the context of reciprocal
engagement and collaborative partnerships. In the same vein, UNAM must also strive
for environmental sustainability, which would entail helping communities better cope
and deal with issues of climate change and its related social implications.
The expected strategic outcome for this theme is that UNAM will contribute to the
creation of a responsive and accountable society that is guided by moral, economic
and social imperatives, and which ascribes to the fundamental tenets of lifelong
learning, knowledge creation and community empowerment. This theme has the
following two strategic objectives.
7.4.1 Improve social relevance through local community projects
With its 12 fully fledged university across the country, UNAM performs strategic
functions in the development of Namibia and, as such, it physically transforms the
surrounding environments, neighbourhoods, cities and regions through modern, state-
of-the-art investments, construction, landscaping and social networking capacity
which create employment opportunities, support the service industry and sustain local
economic development.
UNAM is endowed with the necessary social networking connections, information
infrastructure, technical know-how, institutional reputation, teleconferencing
capacities and strategic social projects nationwide, and occupies a central role in
the social stratum of the country.
This would not only be accomplished through disseminating knowledge and creating
awareness, but equally by, strategically, applying resources at its disposal to the
mutual benefit of collaborations with national and international partners, which make
an impact on the whole society, including marginalized communities.
