The expected strategic outcome of this theme is university research and innovation
directed to address 21st Century challenges that maximise the benefits of the 4th
industrial revolution in the context of Namibia. This theme has the following two
strategic objectives.
7.3.1 Commercialise research and innovation outputs
New and enterprising ideas and commercial opportunities for research and
innovation will be identified and developed, and incentives will be introduced to
foster entrepreneurship. The commercialisation of University research and innovation
outputs and intellectual property, including patents and copyrights, will be
developed and marketed as quality products and sold for profit to increase third-
stream income.
7.3.2 Improve research and innovation
UNAM undertakes to upgrade and improve the University’s facilities, laboratories and
equipment in order to incubate and develop promising new research, enterprising
and innovative ideas, and 21st-century technologies required by the economies of
the 4th industrial revolution. It is expected that doing so will contribute positively to
research, innovation and enterprise development outcomes. UNAM will make
additional budgetary provisions, and endeavour to increase successful grant
proposals and applications. Furthermore, it commits to increasing funds for promoting
the research and innovation outputs that are expected of a leading higher
education institution in the country.
7.4 Community Engagement, Social Relevance and Environmental Sustainability
There is an increasing awareness and consensus, globally, that community
engagement is an essential social responsibility of tertiary institutions alongside
research and learning. Therefore, UNAM’s outreach to the public, industry, alumni and
stakeholders must improve noticeably to expand these engagements.
As an engaged university through teaching, training, learning, research and its
innovative capacity, UNAM is able to make a meaningful contribution to the
