TOPIC 8

Quantitative designs and their application in health sciences research

Purpose: The purpose of this presentation is to provide postgraduate students and early career
researchers in health sciences with an understanding of the different quantitative research designs and

their application in health sciences research. By the end of the presentation, participants should have a
clear understanding of how to choose the appropriate quantitative design for their research, and how to
apply this design to their health sciences research.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of this presentation, participants should be able to:

                   1. Explain the different types of quantitative research designs, including experimental, quasi-
                       experimental, correlational, and survey designs.
                   2. Discuss the strengths and limitations of each quantitative research design, and how they can be

                       applied in health sciences research.
                   3. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of identifying the research question and

hypothesis before choosing the appropriate quantitative research design.
                   4. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of connecting the research design to the
                       objectives and data collection methods.

                   5. Apply appropriate quantitative research design principles to their own health sciences research,
and critically reflect on the implications of these principles for research design and
                       interpretation.
