Literature Review: Different approaches and using objectives to create a literature review
Purpose: The purpose of this presentation is to provide postgraduate students and early career
researchers with an understanding of the different approaches to the literature review and how to use
research objectives to create a comprehensive and well-structured literature review. By the end of the
presentation, participants should have a clear understanding of the importance of literature review in
research, the different approaches to the literature review, as well as the steps involved in creating a
literature review that is closely aligned with research objectives.
Learning Outcomes: By the end of this presentation, participants should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the purpose and importance of a literature review in research.
2. Identify the different approaches to the literature review, including systematic review, scoping
review, narrative review, and meta-analysis.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of each literature review
approach, and when each approach is appropriate to use.
4. Identify the sources of information for a literature review, including academic journals, books,
reports, and online databases.
5. Develop research objectives that are clear and specific, to guide the literature review.
6. Understand the process of selecting and screening articles for inclusion in the literature review.
7. Develop a comprehensive and well-structured literature review that is aligned with research
objectives, including a clear introduction, critical analysis of the literature, and a summary of
the findings.
8. Demonstrate understanding of the importance of citing and referencing sources correctly in the
literature review, and the consequences of plagiarism.
