How to choose a research topic and prepare a research proposal for a higher degree

Purpose: The purpose of this topic is to provide postgraduate students and early career researchers with
practical tips and guidance on how to choose a research topic and prepare a research proposal for a
higher degree. By the end of the presentation, participants should have a clear understanding of the key

steps involved in choosing a research topic and developing a research proposal, as well as the criteria
for evaluating the quality of a research proposal.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of this presentation, participants should be able to:

1. Understand the importance of selecting an appropriate research topic for a higher degree.

2. Identify the key factors to consider when choosing a research topic, including their research
interests, available resources, and research gaps in the literature.
3. Develop a research question and hypothesis that is aligned with their research topic.

4. Understand the structure and key elements of a research proposal, including the introduction,
literature review, methodology, expected results, and timeline.
5. Identify the criteria for evaluating the quality of a research proposal, including the clarity of the

research question, the feasibility of the methodology, and the potential contribution to the field.
