A snippet into mixed methods designs in health sciences research
Purpose: The purpose of this presentation is to provide postgraduate students and early career
researchers in health sciences with an understanding of mixed methods research designs and their
application in health sciences research. By the end of the presentation, participants should have a clear
understanding of how to choose the appropriate mixed methods design for their research, and how to
apply this design to their health sciences research.
Learning Outcomes: By the end of this presentation, participants should be able to:
1. Define mixed methods research, and explain its purpose and application in health sciences
research.
2. Explain the different types of mixed methods designs, including convergent, sequential, and
explanatory designs.
3. Discuss the strengths and limitations of each mixed methods design, and how they can be
applied in health sciences research.
4. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of identifying the research question and aim
before choosing the appropriate mixed methods design.
5. Demonstrate understanding of the importance of selecting appropriate data collection tools and
methods for mixed methods research in health sciences, such as surveys, interviews, and
observations.
6. Demonstrate understanding of the importance of integrating quantitative and qualitative data
analysis in mixed methods research in health sciences, and how to choose appropriate data
analysis techniques, such as content analysis, thematic analysis, or statistical analysis.
7. Discuss the ethical considerations in mixed methods research design in health sciences, such as
informed consent, confidentiality, and anonymity.
8. Apply appropriate mixed methods research design principles to their own health sciences
research, and critically reflect on the implications of these principles for research design and
interpretation.
