TOPIC 11
Sampling methods in research– the link to the research design and objectives
Purpose: The purpose of this presentation is to provide postgraduate students and early career
researchers with an understanding of sampling methods in research, and how they are linked to the
research design and objectives. By the end of the presentation, participants should have a clear
understanding of the different sampling methods, how to choose the appropriate sampling method for
their research, and how to link it to the research design and objectives.
Learning Outcomes: By the end of this presentation, participants should be able to:
1. Define sampling in research, and explain its importance in ensuring the representativeness and
generalizability of research findings.
2. Explain the different types of sampling methods, including probability and non-probability
sampling methods.
3. Discuss the strengths and limitations of each sampling method, and how they are linked to the
research design and objectives.
4. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of identifying the research question and aim
before choosing the appropriate sampling method.
5. Discuss the importance of sampling bias and its effects on research findings, and how to
minimize it through appropriate sampling methods.
6. Apply appropriate sampling methods to their research, and critically reflect on the implications
of these methods for research design and interpretation.
