Suggestions that Support Good Classroom Discipline

                   • Student involvement in establishing procedures, regulations and decisions will foster
                       cooperation from students.
                   • Know the students with whom you will be working. Study the cumulative folder, talk to
the parents and former teachers. However, refrain from making judgments before getting
                       to know the student.
                   • Be prompt and be prepared. Plan lessons so that all students will have sufficient
challenging and enriching work for the entire class period.
                   • Try to evaluate student progress as soon as possible so the intervention process can begin
                       immediately.
                   • Be fair, impartial, and respectful! Give each student an opportunity to gain recognition in
                       an acceptable manner.
                   • Give students the security of knowing exactly where they stand. Review the school and
                       classroom rules frequently.
                   • When possible reprimand in private. Show students the same courtesy you expect from
                       them
                   • Be consistent, if behavior is considered unacceptable one day, then the same behavior must
be unacceptable every day. Negative actions should be noticed and corrected immediately.
                   • Whenever a few students have been responsible for an incident, take care of the guilty
parties. Mass punishment generally does not gain respect from the students.
                   • Use your voice to your advantage. It can soothe or abuse your students. Project your voice
but keep it calm. Students will “turn off and tune out” when excessive yelling takes
                       place.
                   • Speak to the class or begin the introduction to a lesson only when you have 100% of the
student’s attention. Establish this practice on the first day of school.
                   • Give directions clearly! Quick listening activities should be integrated in the lesson.
                   • Be positive! Ensure that each student has some measure of success! Students should be
praised often for independent actions. Focus on the strong points of your students
                   • Alternate your activities within your lesson presentation. Incorporate hands-on real-world
                       component within the lesson.
                   • Make parent contact an important part of your professional communications. Keep parents
well-informed through department newsletters, phone calls or invitations to visit your
                       classroom.

               Classrooms and Hallways

Please keep classrooms and hallways neat, clean, inviting, and engaging. These areas are to be
used for instruction and/or student activities. Be sure to do the following on a routine basis:

                          ▪ Store all equipment not in use in a closed cabinet
                          ▪ Keep displays and bulletin boards current
