special education services has an Individual Education Plan (IEP) which must be followed. An
IEP is determined by the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee. The regular
education teachers, special education teachers and parents/guardians are vital and contributing
members of this committee, and it is through the action and decisions of this committee that a
student’s plan is developed and/or changed. Any member may call for a meeting at any time. All
teachers who have special education students in their classes are responsible for reviewing the
student’s IEP and ensuring all modifications are carried out. It is mandatory that a special
education child’s regular and special education teacher meet on a regular basis to discuss the
student’s progress.
The least-restrictive environment (LRE) in which a student is successful is required by law.
Again, it is the ARD committee that make placement decisions based on each student’s individual
needs.
Our school offers the following services to students who are eligible:
• Regular classroom instruction
• Regular classroom instruction with consultation from a special education teacher
• Regular classroom instruction with a special education teacher or teaching assistant
present to help
• Other options as needed and included in IEP
Remember that students with disabilities are guaranteed by law an education in the least restrictive
environment (L.R.E.) This covers their inclusion in all recreational and other activities (e.g.,
recess, field trips, assemblies, etc.).
Special education records must be kept separate from cumulative folders.
Supervision of Classes
It is a violation of school policy to leave students unattended. Your students should never be left
unsupervised. Getting coffee/soft drinks/water/snacks, checking your box, taking/making phone
calls, making copies, etc. are not acceptable reasons for leaving your class. These things should
all be done at other times. If you must take a restroom break or have some other urgent
situation, make sure you have someone cover your class. Unsupervised classrooms are open
invitations for accidents, injuries, or other incidents we would all prefer to avoid.
During school transitions staff members should walk students to and from the cafeteria and to and
from other activities arranged outside the classroom. At times, you may send a student to the
bathroom or elsewhere in the building with a hall pass. Please be aware of who is out of the
classroom and make every attempt to keep students together in case of emergency. The
responsibility and authority of staff extends beyond the classroom. The development of school
citizenship is a team effort.
