COMPUTER COMPETENCY INDEX (CCI) AND UTILIZATION OF
                      COMPUTER-BASED INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
                               BY TEACHERS IN ECONOMICS
                              TWINKLE PEARL M. DOMANTAY

This descriptive-correlational study involved 171 teachers in Economics (Grade 10
Araling Panlipunan), and their 18 head teachers, from six (6) Schools Divisions in the Province
of Pangasinan during the SY 2015- 2016.
It determined the computer competency index (CCI) of the respondent-teachers and
their extent of utilization of computer-based instructional materials in teaching Economics.
The four (4) domains of CCI are: 1) Technological Domain (Knowledge and Skills in basic
computer operation competencies), 2) Social and Ethical Domain, 3)Pedagogical Domain, and
        4)Professional Domain.
The independent variables considered are socio-demographic-educational attributes
of the respondents, namely: age, sex, civil status, highest educational attainment, years of
teaching experience, number of relevant trainings, and computer competency index (CCI). The
dependent variable is the extent of utilization of computer-based instructional materials (CBIM)
by the respondent-teachers. The areas of utilization of CBIM are: a) planning, b)presentation
and development of the lesson, and c) evaluation of learning outcomes.
Overall, the respondent obtained CCI rating equivalent to “competent” in all the four
domains. The grand overall weighted mean (GOWM) for the extent of utilization of CBIM by
the respondents is 3.69, equivalent to “extensive,” in transmuted rating. The variables, age,
civil status, years of teaching experience, and CCI are the source of variation in the extent of
utilization of CBIM by the teachers.
The extent of utilization of CBIM is strongly correlated to the variables, age, civil status,
years of teaching experience, and CCI. Younger teachers (less than 25 years old) obtained
higher CCI and tend to utilize CBIM more extensively than their older counterpart. Thus, In-
service trainings on the four domains of the standard Computer Competency, and utilization of
        CBIM are strongly recommended.
