BEST PRACTICES OF PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PRINCIPAL
ON COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
ARIEL M. FERNANDEZ
This study determined the level of best practices of school principals on community
development in the City Divisions of Pangasinan SY 2015-2016. Specifically, it sought to answer
the following problems: What is the profile of the respondents in terms of age, sex, civil status,
length of service as school administrator, highest educational attainment and type of trainings
attended? What is the level of best practices of public school principals on community development
in the following areas namely: health and nutrition, environmental concern, drug addiction
prevention, food production, responsible parenthood, and peace and order? Is there significant
difference in the level of best practices of public school principals on community development
and the profile variables? Is there significant relationship between the best practices of public
school principals and the profile variables? What are the problems encountered by the public
school principals in their best practices on community development? and What program can be
developed to lessen the problems encountered by the public school principals?
The following are the salient findings of this study: Most of the respondents belong in
the 31-45 years old, female, married, had been school administrator for 10 years below, with
Master of Arts degree and attended community development related trainings. The level of best
practices of the public school principals on community development is “always” with responsible
parenthood having the highest weighted mean and health and nutrition having the lowest mean.
There is no significant relationship between the profile variables of the respondents and the six
areas of community development. The respondents encountered “serious” problems in their
level of best practices on community development.
The principal-respondents have the competence and skill in community development,
but still wanting of upgrading their level of best practices on some indicators in the different
areas. The variables considered in this study are not sources of variation as to the level of best
practices of the respondents on community development. No relationship existed between the
levels of best practices on community development and their profile variables. The problems
encountered are similar problems by any DepED personnel in the performance of their functions.
Based on the conclusions made the following are recommended: The school principal
concerned should be encouraged to finish their doctoral degree considering that they occupy
high positions in the DepED. The school principal should maintain a high level of best practices
on community development by participating in other activities of civic organizations to enhance
their skills. The proposed enhancement program should be implemented in all the divisions, for
teachers, school administrators, external stakeholders and other NGOs. Future studies should be
conducted to include more variables than those considered in this study.
