TEACHING APPROACHES IN MATHEMATICS: BASIS FOR
ENHANCEMENT LEARNING OUTCOME
ELLEN B. CONTAOI
This study determined the practices in the use of the teaching approaches in Mathematics
by the respondent teachers of Umingan, San Quintin and Balungao Pangasinan Division II, S.Y.
2014-2015. Specifically, it sought to determine the profile of the respondents in terms of age,
sex, civil status, highest educational attainment and number of years of experience in teaching
Mathematics.
Likewise, it looked into the practices in the use of the teaching approaches in
Mathematics by the respondent teachers and the degree of seriousness of the problems
encountered by the respondent teachers in the application of the teaching approaches in
Mathematics. The descriptive method of research was employed and the questionnaire checklist
was used in gathering data. To address the problems of this study, the statistical measures were
used for data analysis and interpretations. These are the frequency counts (f) percentage and
the average weighted means.
The findings indicate that 1) majority of the respondents belong to age bracket 30
years old and below that is 17 or 40.5 percent, female dominated, 29 or 69 percent, married,
26 or 61.9 percent, bachelor’s degree in secondary education graduate, that is 29 or 69 percent
and have 5 years and below teaching experience in Mathematics that is 22 or 52.4 percent 2)
the practice in the use of the teaching approaches in Mathematics by the respondent teachers
obtained an overall average weighted mean of 4.10 denoting a descriptive equivalent rating of
“Often Practiced” 3) the degree of seriousness of the problems encountered by the respondent
teachers in the application of teaching approaches in Mathematics was moderately serious except
in the application of contextual learning and constructivism approaches which were found to be
serious (4) A program has been crafted to enhance learning outcome in Mathematics.
In the light of findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn: 1) respondent
teachers are relatively young, equipped with relevant educational qualifications and practically
young in the service 2) the Mathematics teachers of Umingan, San Quintin and Umingan
apply the different teaching approaches to enhance learning outcome and 3) the most serious
problems encountered by the respondent teachers in the application of the teaching approaches
were found in the use of contextual and constructivism approaches in teaching.
Based on the findings and conclusions of the study, the researcher arrived at the
following recommendations: 1) Mathematics teachers should be encouraged to pursue
their master’s degree in reputable institutions for advanced learning in the area; 2) a well-
designed program of recruitment of young qualified Mathematics teachers be formulated and
implemented; 3) an enhancement program should be crafted and implemented in classroom
teaching to improve learning outcome and 4) other studies should be conducted to look into
other aspects of the extent of application of teaching approaches in mathematics.
