The descriptive survey method was utilized in the conduct of the study. A Student
Learning Inventory Scale developed by Anthony Grasha and Sheryl Reichmann in 2001 was
adapted to measure the students learning styles. This Inventory Scale was administered to 177
Grade 9 student-respondents. Frequency count, percentage and weighted mean were used to
analyze the obtained data. The findings of the study indicate that the Grade 9 students in the
public secondary schools of Rosales, Pangasinan highly preferred the collaborative, participative
and competitive learning. The least preferred learning style was the avoidant learning styles.
Based on the findings, the following conclusions were drawn: There is a large difference in
the way the students respond to the demands and requirements of the subject Science and
Technology as many of the students were collaborative, participative and competitive who were
more or less high performers than their counterparts such as the dependent and avoidant
learners who are relatively unenthusiastic in academic performance. Further, no matter what the
students adopt as learning styles, there are still some difficulties that emerged in the classroom.
Many of these difficulties emanate from their attitudes and feelings toward the subject, the
classroom situation and even the teachers.
Based on the findings and conclusions of this study, the following recommendations are
offered: Teachers in Science and Technology must use a variety of teaching strategies so that
students are exposed to familiar and unfamiliar ways of learning process. Instructional activities,
teaching aids and materials must be suited to students who differ in a wide variety of behavior
and ability. Although students with learning difficulties do not always work well in a mixed-based
learning environment, teachers’ persistence on guidance, care, attitude and feelings often result
in a productive experience. The proposed intervention activities are suggested to be tried out
by the Science and Technology class in Rosales, Pangasinan.
