DECODING
Grade Level: Pre-School
Prerequisite: Play Onwards & Phonics Game. (Also, Families 1 & 2 and Derivatives in “The Basic
Six” are all very helpful, being that they are practically identical to these cards.)
Skill Developed: Ability to combine consonants and consonantal blends with any of the 360 roots of
the English language.
Objective: To read the monosyllabic words, as well as the few bi-syllabic words, printed on the
backside of the cards.
Note: It is advisable to prep by going over the pictorial side of a card before playing the backside. For
example, review Card 4 before playing Card 4a. Doing this will make the game much easier for the
players to understand.
How to Play: Depending on the teacher’s discretion, either she or the individual players choose which word,
row, or column to read. (With Natural Reader, you can check to hear whether the pronunciation is right or
not. To select a word, double click on it; to select more than one word in a row, depress your mouse and drag
the cursor to the left or right; to select a column or a partial column, first hold down the “Alt” key, then
depress your mouse and run it downwards over your chosen words. Be sure the speed in right for your students.
To do so, click on the jagged wheel in the Natural Reader box and slide the circle one way or the other on the
horizontal line.)
Scoring: One point is awarded for each correct attempt, i.e. pronunciation.
