ADVANCED VOCABULARY
Grade Level: Third Grade and Above
Prerequisite: Vocabulary Game, Play Onwards, and Work on Words.
Skill Developed: Ability to recognize definitions, synonyms, antonyms, idiomatic and other usage of
monosyllabic words and their derivatives.
Objective: To pair definitions, synonyms, antonyms, idiomatic and other usages with the various
monosyllabic words.
Preparation: Two steps are necessary before playing this game: one, the card(s) to be used, like
the one shown below, should be printed out and given to the players (who are seated
so as not to view of the computer monitor); two, the parent/teacher should open a
tab for each of the several words she intends to cover in the game. For example, for
204a, she should have four tabs opened.
How to Play: The teacher selects a definition, synonym, etc.
from one of the various cards (tabs) which she reads it to
the players. (When appropriate, she may use “blank” for the
missing word.) The players take turns attempting to choose
the correct corresponding vocab word. (After game is over,
the teacher should gather the players around the computer
and discuss the several vocabulary words played.)

Scoring One point is awarded for each word identified correctly. (No points are awarded for grammatical
correctness in this game.)
