Physical Education
(OCR)
A level Physical Education offers the exciting opportunity for pupils to further their knowledge
of the intricate anatomy of the human body. Practical application allows pupils to study the
impacts of exercise on a trained and untrained athlete, analysing the use of sports science
advancements in sport. Pupils will explore the sociocultural history of sport and its place in
the modern world.
Pupils will develop theoretical knowledge and understanding of the factors that underpin
physical activity and sport and use this knowledge to improve performance. They will
developing skills and techniques and understand how physiological and psychological states
affect performance. The syllabus also includes the contribution physical activity makes to
health and fitness and how to analyse and evaluate performance as well as the key socio-
cultural factors that influence people’s involvement in physical activity and sport.
Assessment criteria:
• Paper 1: Physiological factors affecting performance
• Paper 2: Psychological factors affecting performance
• Paper 3: Socio-cultural issues in physical activity and sport
• Performance in physical education - Practical Assessment and Coursework -
30% of A level
Entry requirements:
A minimum of a grade 6 at GCSE. As there is a practical element to the course pupils must be
a strong performer (school first team or equivalent) in one sport of their choice.
