• Professional associations with codes of ethics and competency standards. Codes of ethics
are only for professional associations that mean you may not go to jail but you are not
allowed to practice as a pharmacist because you do not have a certain standard to talk to
the patient. It is about patient confidentiality.
Incorporating Professionalism into Practice
The American Society of Hospital Pharmacists (ASHP) encourages practitioners,
administrators, faculty members, preceptors, and pharmacy students to contemplate and to
incorporate into their practices the guiding principles set forth in the Code of Ethics for
Pharmacists and the following 10 characteristics of a professional:
1. Knowledge and skills of the profession - Pharmacists should be expert in your
knowledge and skills of the profession
2. Commitment to self-improvement of skills and knowledge -In Thailand, after
pharmacy graduation, all pharmacy graduates have to take the exam to get credits each
year to show that you are self-improvement of skills and knowledge.
3. Service orientation - It means that you need to be able to do the work with a passion not
just only to get some money.
4. Pride in and service to the profession - Pharmacists need to take pride when providing
any medication or information to patients.
5. Covenantal relationship with the patient - It is about the personalistic and patient-
centered relationship.
6. Creativity and innovation - Pharmacists should have creativity, innovation, and try to
improve new things in your practice.
7. Conscience and trustworthiness - It is one of the characteristics that all pharmacists need
to have.
8. Accountability for his or her work - Accountability does not mean about money but it
talks about responsibility for your work.
9. Ethically sound decision-making
10. Leadership - It is not that you are the leader but how can you follow the rule and follow
the team.

What is a professional?
• Professionals do not just work to earn a paycheck
• Income is important, but professionals view their work as a source of pride and a reflection of
the role they play in society there for when you talk about the professional, it is not just only the
