To further support my use of segmented videos, I decided to use Google Analytics,
on our school’s YouTube account to examine the viewer retention of my previously
uploaded videos. I created a spreadsheet (Table 4.1) to determine the average view
duration in minutes for each uploaded video and compared it to the video’s total
length. From this analysis, I was able to gauge an appropriate video length. As can
be seen, the longer length videos tend to have a much lower viewer retention rate,
whilst the shorter videos have a much higher viewer retention rate. I am aware that
this is not an exact science as ulterior motives such as internet disturbances can
hinder the viewer retention rate. However, Fishman (2016) reported that for a video
of 4-5 minutes, viewer retention will be no more than 60%, while a 1-2 minute video
had a viewer retention rate of approximately 75%. Viewer engagement is steady up
to the 2 minute mark, denoting that a 90-120 second video will hold the viewer's
attention as much as a 30-second video. I kept these findings and recommendations
in mind when segmenting my reading videos.
