2. Phonics - this video starts by briefly explaining the five main components of
reading. It displays in-class footage of our younger pupils learning phonics. It
informs the parents of how pupils begin their reading journey and
recommends useful websites the parents can access to learn more about
phonics as well as how they can become more involved in their child’s
reading at home.
3. Vocabulary - this video informs the parents what to do when their child
encounters new vocabulary or does not understand the meaning of a word. It
prompts the parent to help their child use a dictionary or an online resource.
4. Comprehension - this video demonstrates to the parent how to ask their
child to discuss the book cover, summarise a chapter, paragraph or page after
reading it and predict what might happen next in the story. All these reading
techniques improve and assess their child’s reading comprehension.
5. Fluency – this video explains what reading fluency is and gives a
demonstration of what good reading fluency sounds like. The demonstration
is performed by one of our sixth class pupils who incorporates all the main
reading strategies such as reading with intonation, expression and correct
pace. It explains how the parent should model reading fluency and ask their
child to replicate.
6. Motivation – this videos explains how motivation is a child’s willingness
and eagerness to read. It demonstrates how to encourage your child to read
more and the importance of choosing books they enjoy and that challenges
them. This video also models how to ask your child questions during their
reading homework.
7. Expression - this video is a continuation of the Fluency video. The pupils
model how to read with intonation, expression, and at the correct speed and
pace.
