To further understand how to use technology to enhance parental involvement, I
studied the literature relating to this field, examining what has been done before in
similar fields of study with a view to using this knowledge within my own study.
Research has shown that interventions such as online demonstration videos that
instruct parents on how to read with their child have been effective in improving
reading achievement (Purcell-Gates et al., 2014). As my goal was to implement
short, demonstrative videos on how parents can read aloud with their child, I also
researched instructional design in video production to give me a better understanding
of the design phase. I visited similar school websites who have incorporated this
method of online sharing of resources to guide and inspire my multimedia creation.
4.3 Understand
During the second stage of the EEA, the researcher recognises how their talents and
skills can help improve their workplace in a practical manner. I will now explain
where the idea of the ‘Parent Learning Zone’ originated from and how my
experience, skills and talents facilitated the development of my resource and
research. Once I recognised the area of need within my workplace, I opened the lines
of communication with my work colleagues to ask for their opinions, ideas and
recommendations for the practical implementation of eLearning within our school
community (Figure 4.4).

The suggestion of improving the quality of reading homework was proposed by a
number of teachers. This is one of the primary reasons I chose reading as the subject
matter of my multimedia resource (Figure 4.5).
