MEI XING
Shanghai
circa 1910- 1935
Not much is known about this artisan
silversmith currently. It is just known
that he operated in Shanghai but as
yet it is unclear if he was creating
items for direct sale to the public or
whether he worked in conduction with
any of the many retail silversmiths in
Shanghai at this time.
The style of these pieces of cutlery
bearing the mark does not place it in
any particular definitive style but it
probably does indicate it was
intended to appeal to the increasingly
expanding wealthy Chinese middle
class. The inclusion of a ‘fu’ symbol
for prosperity supports this theory.
