N [FULL NAME OF SILVERSMITH UNDOCUMENTED]
Canton
circa 1820-1840
A rare and mysterious mark. Only one item of silver has ever been identified bearing the mark. This could have
been an itinerant artisan who may have made an ad hoc piece of silver by special request. Research continues.
A high relief hunting scene decorates
the lid of the snuff box with a
continuation of the same narrative
around the four sides. The reverse side
has a symmetrical motif which could
possibly be influenced by the Buddhist
symbol ‘lún’ or ‘wheel of fire’.
